PHARMACEUTICAL SECTOR OVERVIEW OF LATIN AMERICAN RS

Enterprise Forum [1] just released in November 2009, the results of his study "The State of Corporate Social Responsibility under the gaze of Business Executives Latin America, 2009. "

This study covered 529 executives, located in 15 countries and 14 economic sectors. That is to say that it was of organizations, from SMEs to Multinational and both the industrial and commercial sector and services. It is also a study that covered both the development of different variables -7 social responsibility in total, as the installed capacity in organizations to carry out socially responsible management. The instruments in this study were developed based on the ISO-26000 in Working Draft version 4.2.

Among the results, include the following:
1. The employee relations appears as the more developed.
2. The corporate governance and transparency variables appear as the less developed variables.
3. 68% of the organizations covered has signed agreements to join the institutions that promote social responsibility.
4. 65% of these organizations has a formal charge address social responsibility in management.
5. 40% of them regularly publishes a sustainability report, 70% of which follows the GRI methodology and 58% do so by involving stakeholders in its drafting. See Figures No. 1 and 2.

Finally, it is noteworthy that, amid a generalized crisis year, not only identifies significant progress in region in terms of social responsibility, but the research confirms the interest and optimism among executives in the near future, in the sense that RS PATH is correct for organizations. It should be noted, however, that the study sample was formed by invitation and, therefore, its results can not be extrapolated or generalized without due care, which, in my view, not to be very useful to read trends.

A DECADE OF THE MOTOCOCHES

At 31 December 2009 A total of 1,226 organizations around the world presented their sustainability report under GRI standard. You have to understand that many organizations have also its sustainability report, or not following the GRI methodology, or follow it without formally report this to the Global Reporting Initiative. With all that, even timid figure is no doubt. In Figure No. 1 we can see the trends over the decade just ended, which clearly can see two situations:
1. 2004 was the year of the launch of the worldwide acceptance of this standard. Remember about the GRI was founded in 1997, in 2000 launched its first guide to report Sustainability-the-GRI1 and in 2001 was consolidated as an entity independent of its management bodies, UNEP and CERES [1] -.
2. 2009 marks a year of recession, a situation that is almost obvious, for the diversion of managerial attention to issues of survival.
Figure 1: Global GRI

If we look at what has happened in Latin America (see Figure No. 2), it is clear the leadership of countries like Brazil and Chile, supported by Peru, Mexico and Colombia. And you are clearly displayed modest Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia (Nicaragua does not even appear), surprisingly the countries with governments more "worried" about the social.
Chart No. 2: Latin America
And a closer look we can appreciate in Figure No. 3, where we see the trend comparison of the leading countries over the decade. In this graph we can see how:
1. Brazil is the first country in the region to adopt the GRI standard, right in 2000.
2. Chile would in 2002 and Peru in 2004.
3. Colombia and Mexico would be added in 2005.
Figure 3: Comparison Leaders

In short, sustainability reporting is a relatively new management practice. The GRI standard has been imposed with greater acceptance world with a strong tendency. Latin America is a region still shy, but that has weight. The crisis did affect significantly the attention that came from organizations providing this management variable. We hope to resume the route this year that has just begun.

GRI IN MEDELLIN

Although this news was disclosed at the time, the local press, I wanted to meet two goals to comment:
1. Make visible impacts in the light of the concept of sustainable urban development,
2. And help the dissemination of what I consider an extraordinary, intelligent alternatives to be replicated and maintained above any consideration of local politics.

1. What was the problem?

Medellín, as almost all cities in the world, was for centuries a informal transport system based on animal-drawn carts , colloquially called "bitches" in our city (see photo 1). Its purpose has always been multiple, hauling construction materials, debris, garbage, furniture and fixtures, water and even potential passengers.

Photo No. 1: Fox and Zorrero (photo Javier Agudelo, El Tiempo, Colombia)

Clearly, transportation is an ancient and seemingly innocuously productive. But it is a practice that moves from country to city, it generates many negative impacts, among which include:
- The conflict with the dynamics of urban mobility, caused by the differential speed, resulting in risks, jams, traffic ...
- The deterioration of quality of life animal: walking on asphalt, under endless days, with Poor nutrition and poor, subject to harsh treatment ... is a bleak outlook for any animal.
- The informality, which avoids the most basic work rules, occupational health, transit, interaction and business performance.

All this, in exchange for a practical and necessary, but accompanied by a precarious and plagued by labor in countless cases. A census made by the Mayor of the city in 2009, found a population of 228 foxes running only on the perimeter of the city of Medellín, not considering its metropolitan area. It is estimated that in Colombia, operating about 5,000. What about Latin America?

2. What was the initiative?

were invited, through a highly participatory and persuasive, to all owners of "bitches" to that delivered (chariot and horse) in exchange for a motocoche (see photo 2), if you want to continue in office, or in exchange for seed capital (col $ 7 million, U.S. $ 3,500) to start a venture different products. In both cases, the offer was accompanied by the licensing process, training, social support and even personal cards, to facilitate the transition.
Photo No. 2: New Motocoches (photo Javier Agudelo. El Tiempo, Colombia)

After the process, after five (5) partial deliveries (the process of voluntary choice made it necessary as well), along four (4) months, a total of 141 "Zorreras" motocoche welcomed the idea and the rest, 87 "Zorreras", opted for a different productive enterprise. Thus, From this year, the movement of foxes was finally banned in the city (note that the ban is a consequence and not a premise of the process.) Its circulation will be penalized from now, with the seizure of the same. And 228 horses have passed a stage of recovery veterinary outside the Aburrá Valley, then to enter a program of adoption coordinated by the Humane Society and aimed at farmers who need them for their work in the field.

3. A balance must

3. 1. From the point of environmentally:

- Removed a significant obstacle to urban mobility.
- were restored to their natural habitat to a negligible population of 228 horses.
- were removed from the public highway daily stool this equine population.
- It laid the groundwork for better regulation and better control of urban debris.

3.2. From the social point of view:

- is dignified, was formalized and began to professionalize the office of "Zorrero."
- were improved occupational health and hygiene of the trade.
- was preserved and improved use of a population of not less than 500 families.
- new options are opened for investment and entrepreneurship.
- It became clear that animal abuse does have and should have a solution.
- It was demonstrated that social partnership works: several government agencies, NGO and the 228 "Zorreras" participated in the process.

3.3. From the economic point of view:

- was preserved and improved the income and productivity of the office.
- Improved cost structure the business as a horse feed is a fixed cost, but fuel consumption is a variable cost.
- Improved versatility service (soon we will provide various services for home, something unthinkable in the old scheme of "bitches").
- was activated automotive cycle, the product of the initial investment and subsequent operation of the 141 new units.

4. In conclusion

Municipal Administration invested in this initiative (motocoches more seed, more management of the program) a total of col $ 2,896 million (about U.S. $ 144,000). As you can see the benefits, and sustainability of the program itself, which only requires an initial intervention, but leaves door open for many other social measures later (to regulate the handling of debris, the regulation of animal abuse, etc..), I must say that is an initiative that has required more intelligence than money. So now when I've had the experience of sharing with these new motocoches way, I could not help feeling a healthy inner joy at seeing my city improvement, based on the improvement of its people, as shown in the picture final, in which I had the opportunity to witness the new system fully operational.

MERCHANTS OR LEADERS: That is the Question!

in Colombia, and much of the world, development suffers from a large deficit dirigencial characterized by three harsh realities:
1. We have many more merchants to managers,
2. We have many more business managers,
3. And we have more entrepreneurs leaders.

Indeed, it produces a lot of despair do cling to positions of power-politics, business, union-a lot of characters with minds of traders. Maybe that's why management journals, almost without exception, have names like "Power", "Money", "Fortune." It is the mentality predatory power understood as domination and not service. In this environment, it is difficult migrate to models of sustainable and responsible development. need to reverse the pyramid of leadership in our societies . Otherwise, what we expect in the 21st century will be a series of recurrent crises, increasingly frequent, increasingly deep. Social crisis, economic and environmental alike.

First, universities should be thorough rethinking their curricula, both in their careers "technical" and "management." Use quotation marks because the dichotomy between technicians and managers is false and must be overcome. Also our organizations must be thoroughly reviewing their profiles management and compensation models, especially those related to commercial areas, to change the paradigms of business and professional success. For starters, no more yuppies, please! It's the least!

"We call this development?

Look at the picture that I offer up. You can choose: the lane you want the position you like, forward, middle, behind-the make and model of car you fancy, if you want to be a driver or passenger, well ... That's what freedom is, right?

And when you're sitting in the chair is chosen, the self-chosen, and observing the situation but as part of it experimentándote -Only then, I invite you to answer a single question: IS THIS DEVELOPMENT? Or will we have reduced FREEDOM -the most powerful human capacity development and welfare, undreamed- the ephemeral and ruinous choice of slavery as comfortable and convenient ? Let your answer guide your behavior in this new year!

DO YOU KNOW THE IMPACT OF OUR ACTIONS? LULA

I'm afraid not. To make it more practical, I invite you to answer the questionnaire on the graph are heading this note. Take a minute, calculate and record your answer, before you continue reading. For Please: do the exercise as you ... (you can double click the image to enlarge.) Well

. Now that you have your calculation, let me tell you a citizen contemporary consume between 2,000 and 5,000 liters of water a day , depending on the level of development of the country where he has lived. Shocking, right? Do not worry: I do not I was right and I was puzzled when I found the question a few days ago. Have we been formed in a linear view of WORLD AND NOT IN A SYSTEMIC VIEW . Therefore, we measure each individual impact, and we can not measure synergistic impacts - and measure the direct impact, immediate, and we can not measure the indirect, consequential, ie impacts life cycle of each event. This

-not knowing how to measure the impact on the life cycle and synergistic impacts of our actions, not allow us to see realities basic but powerful. For example: you need to know how much water involved each of our daily, not just the water we consume directly through the bath, toilet use, beverages, etc. For illustration, I leave to your consideration the following figures, as documented by National Geographic:
1. Each glass milk you consume has required 200 liters of water in their production.
2. Each cup of coffee meant to enjoy the consumption of 140 liters water.
3. Each egg you add to your diet has needed 135 liters of water to be at your table.
4. A paper craft, you or your secretary use has involved the use of 10 liters of water.
5. Each kilo of meat , to be consumed at home, has involved 1,500 liters of water to get to your table.

When we know the impact on the life cycle of the products we eat and the synergies that generate all our actions, we begin to experience A NEW CONSCIOUSNESS as consumers and as human beings. And that change or extension of field of our consciousness itself can transform society, deep and lasting, we urgently need. Follow this path: it is my recommendation.

How To Make Water Feeder

THANKS!

On Tuesday December 29 has been big news in Latin America: President Lula sanctioned, with slight changes, a law REDUCTION EMISSIONS OF GREENHOUSE GASES-GHG- . I agree with those who say it still has limitations that need to regulate it, etc. But undoubtedly, President Lula is determined to act above the rhetoric that characterized the COP-15 in Copenhagen (the excessive media hype and expectations for this summit has led me to keep my mind on prudent reserve) .

This law provides reductions of between 36.1 and 38.9% in global emissions of Brazil, by 2020, based on 1990. It is certainly a goal shy, if we consider that between 1985 and 2000, greenhouse emissions in Brazil grew 65%. But are facts and, to me, that is worth more. The process will be long and difficult, as illustrated by the declaration of infeasibility that the French constitutional court recently issued (December 29 also go a paradox!) On the rate of carbon that Mr Sarkozy wanted to implement the law. In fact, too many and vast geo-economic interests are at stake. For example, Brazil is two years of becoming the first Latin American oil power and this has been the lever of its emerging leadership in the global context and in the so-called BRIC-Brazil, Russia, India and China. Therefore, it is reasonable to think that in this context, it is unrealistic to ask it not to fossil fuels, without going through a planned transition.

President Lula: the limitations above, you are showing the world the path of action, much more promising than the way of rhetoric. Thanks, and keep moving forward!
