At 31 December 2009 A total of 1,226 organizations around the world presented their sustainability report under GRI standard. You have to understand that many organizations have also its sustainability report, or not following the GRI methodology, or follow it without formally report this to the Global Reporting Initiative. With all that, even timid figure is no doubt. In Figure No. 1 we can see the trends over the decade just ended, which clearly can see two situations:
1. 2004 was the year of the launch of the worldwide acceptance of this standard. Remember about the GRI was founded in 1997, in 2000 launched its first guide to report Sustainability-the-GRI1 and in 2001 was consolidated as an entity independent of its management bodies, UNEP and CERES [1] -.
2. 2009 marks a year of recession, a situation that is almost obvious, for the diversion of managerial attention to issues of survival.
Figure 1: Global GRI If we look at what has happened in Latin America (see Figure No. 2), it is clear the leadership of countries like Brazil and Chile, supported by Peru, Mexico and Colombia. And you are clearly displayed modest Venezuela, Ecuador and Bolivia (Nicaragua does not even appear), surprisingly the countries with governments more "worried" about the social.
Chart No. 2: Latin America And a closer look we can appreciate in Figure No. 3, where we see the trend comparison of the leading countries over the decade. In this graph we can see how:
1. Brazil is the first country in the region to adopt the GRI standard, right in 2000.
2. Chile would in 2002 and Peru in 2004.
3. Colombia and Mexico would be added in 2005.
Figure 3: Comparison Leaders In short, sustainability reporting is a relatively new management practice. The GRI standard has been imposed with greater acceptance world with a strong tendency. Latin America is a region still shy, but that has weight. The crisis did affect significantly the attention that came from organizations providing this management variable. We hope to resume the route this year that has just begun.
